Lego Table

From $5 Coffee table I picked up from a curb sale to a Lego table.

(Insert before picture here...when I find it, oops!) FOUND! 11/2/13

After thoroughly sanding.
Probably more thorough than needed since I wasn't refinishing it with a natural color.  I was experimenting with the sander for future projects.  It was also a dark paint.  Nice design comes through.

In order to sand more efficiently and later paint...I took apart as much as I could.
Liquid Nails (for putting Lego plates on). PrimerGloss paint, so I didn't have to use the polycrylic coating.  I used about 2 cans.  Probably only needed a can and a half.  Since I was pregnant, I was masked and trying to keep a distance.  I finally let David take over the painting and efficiency was much better.

Covered the middle where Lego plates would be.  Primer coats.

Same method with blue.  Let dry and reassemble.

It was missing slats.  The places they were missing are perfect for storage, so I left as they were.  We discussed cutting a hole out of the table surface for a tub to put Lego's in.  I wasn't ready to be that elaborate, and it would take up playing space.
This project took 6 green plates and 2 blue plates.  I ordered them from the Lego store online for about $5 a piece.  It gets pricey here.

Used Liquid Nails to attach plates.  Putting Lego pieces where plates meet is important for spacing or pieces won't overlap plates.
The kids love it!  I love that they have a place to build and display their creations!  This is one toy collection I don't mind growing.  All the kids (even adult kids) can create endlessly!

This project was fun!  I have since visited Goodwill on their 50% of furniture days and have some treasures to repurpose...after baby.  I am anxious to grab a china cabinet off Craigslist too!  There have been several great finds in the Cincy area.  Soon!  I would also love to reupholster some wing back chairs, but...whoa...that intimidates me.  Craigslist has some of those that would work great too!   Oh the possibilities!

**I know this is more picture filled than explanatory.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will respond or post if I find it helpful.  I found many great sites for refinishing and Lego table ideas.  I didn't document them, because Google is great for that...and I was all over the place.  I probably pinned a few on Pinterest.
