...laughter! I know he is working really hard to be the best doctor he can be, but he is great at making us all at home feel better.
We thought it would be cold since it is cold at most of the places he interviewed most of the year. David didn't have a coat to keep him warm in some of the temperatures we were reading. The Wilsons kindly let him hibernate in their's for a while. Luckily he didn't have to pay for an extra bag to carry it. The days he travelled were in the 50-60s. He had jackets to keep him warm for those digits
.
David has always enjoyed making others laugh. I have to say, I think most of the recipients enjoy it too. He doesn't have to try very hard. He is a natural. There are moments that replay in my head that I will just bust out laughing. They truly help me get through some moments. Recent activities have played through my head. I wish I had caught him on camera for these two incidents. One of which, I wasn't there. If you have ever heard David retell an incident, he is pretty detailed oriented and good at that as well. He does have a picture of his entertaining trip to Chicago for an interview. It is on his phone. I will post...maybe. If he were typing this, it would be very clear and a picture would not be necessary. I hope I can do these moments justice.Prescription #1: Security Shoes
David finished last week with his fellowship interviews...do you hear that? "Hallelujah!" We are glad for the opportunities, but it has been a busy three months. His trip to Chicago was one he won't forget, I won't forget and the sweet coordinator (that David permanently sealed a smile on her face) won't forget. We are usually rushed from work or an early flight to get him on the plane. I am always anxious for the text message that says he made it through security on time and is just waiting to board...or the delayed, "I am in my seat on the plane." That usually means barely on.
This particular day we were coming from half a day of work. It was hard for him to get out on time and I was concerned he wouldn't make it. His text was, "Made it to gate. Had an interesting experience in security." They had to scan him a few extra times and confiscated his shoes for a few more looks. Then they asked him the golden question, "Sir, did you know you had two different shoes on?" Awesome! No, he didn't, because that would be special if he did mean to. He had two black dress shoes. One with a buckle and one without. When it is early in the morning, tired and in a dark closet trying not to wake your wife, you don't know you have two different shoes on.
This was not the last of those Security Shoes. In order to make packing lighter and easier, he wears the shoes he is going to need for the interview. Yep, he was in those shoes the next day for his interview. The evening before, he needed to iron his shirt. Well, there was no iron in the room. He called the front desk. He could go down and pick it up and take it back to his room. He was already in his comfy clothes, gym shorts and a t-shirt. These went nicely with his Security Slipper Shoes...yep the multi-purpose shoes. That is fancy!
The next day he walked to the hospital campus from the hotel in his Security Shoes, toting his suitcase. He didn't know which building. He was just supposed to contact the coordinator and meet up. They met up. He shared his shoe experience and started things off on a memorable note. When all was said and done, he tapped his Security Shoes together and made it home safely. He made it through security without any more shoe concerns. On the way back, they did stop him for his reflex hammer. He is a doctor. The security officer went to check some reflexes and let David come home with no criminal record.
Prescription #2: Windy Popcorn Days
I don't think I can paint this one to live up to the original event. Sunday before church, we stopped by to check on and say hi to a family who just added a precious little boy to their family. David ran to the door while the rest of us waited in the car. The front door was to the side of the house, so we couldn't see him where we were parked in the drive way. The wind started to pick up quite a bit. A tree to the left of us (the direction in which David was) was doing a back bend. We had talked about the tree to the right of us that looked like it was full of popcorn balls. We wanted to believe it was an apricot tree, but I am almost certain it wasn't. As the wind picked up the popcorn balls or cotton ball vegetation began to fly toward the direction David was. We were all amazed at the powerful winds that had picked up. The house was protecting the winds from David. I had just said to the kids, "Daddy is going to be surprised when he comes around the corner." It couldn't have been timed better. David came around the corner, surprised by the wind...adding his exaggeration. Popcorn balls flying into his mouth and in his hair. If you could have seen it...ahh, wish I had a camera. We were in tears laughing. David's arms flailing, struggling to get back to the car. Hilarious! We had to control ourselves before we got to church. I hope you could imagine it to be somewhat humorous. Seriously...I think of it, images flip through my mind and I laugh out loud!
I love David for many reasons. I love the way he makes me smile, laugh and roll on the floor trying to recover from laughter. Truly medicinal!
