David makes me laugh and all we can do is laugh. The week before his vacation, he was supposed to have half a day Wednesday, a normal (9-5) day Thursday, and half a day Friday. He is on an elective month to give a slight break between busy ones. Well, I have noticed, David is slightly unlucky when it comes to getting a break.
Wednesday just happened to be the one Wednesday a month the doctor was in, so he had a full day. Earlier in the week David had impressed one of the dermatology doctors. We both got a kick out of it because one: he is not a derm fan...might even use the hate word; two: the doctor was impressed by the way David described lesions. Hilarious! This pioneering pediatric dermatologist asked that David be his assistant on Thursday for surgeries. David was less than thrilled and slightly nervous. This is not his strong field and the doctor wasn't the easiest person to work with. He also had to go in an hour earlier than normal. He says he faked it well and had a good day. Honestly, I am sure David is an impressive doctor and won't admit it. He knows his stuff. If he doesn't, he knows where to find the answers.
He ended up working until 630PM, which is late for derm. David went out to the car to leave after a long, undesirable day, to find out it had a flat tire. We were going to attempt to make it to a choir concert at 7PM. He was still calm and cool and confident he would be able to change it quickly and meet us there. I then received a phone call that his spare was flat too, after he had put it on the car. We all piled in the car to pick him up and the flat tire.
Friday morning he was able to get a ride with a co-worker who was on a similar schedule. I dropped the tire off to get repaired. They have the best customer service (Discount Tire)! Friday was going to be a hectic day, but they made it look like the best day ever, so friendly and upbeat. Unfortunately the tire was not repairable, so we had to buy a new tire. They sure put me in a good mood, and I was able to take the news.
David was scheduled to stay a full day Friday, not normal for this rotation. Many of the other doctors, fellows and med students were leaving. David kindly asked what the expectations were. After the crazy week he had, he felt comfortable with leaving. He wasn't going to be penalized either way. Plus his ride was leaving at lunch! It was nice to have him home early. We had a busy afternoon, so we decided we would pick the tire up the next day. We were ok with leaving the car in the lot one more day.
Saturday we cleaned the church building and stayed for the kids' program practice. We came home to eat lunch and then pick up the tire. By this time it was late afternoon. We headed to the hospital. As we pulled up to the lot, I just died laughing. Seriously...our luck! The gate was barricaded with a security guard next to it. There were two cars in front of us. The best part was David's cadi was parked in the middle while chairs and tables/booths were being set up for a neighborhood carnival. So funny! I am cracking up! He proceeded to follow a small bus in. Before he got to the gate the security guard stopped him and asked what reason he needed in. He said he needed to change his tire and get his car. The security officer said something like this, "You are the owner of the green Cadi? I will gladly let you in to get your car off my lot (what, your lot?). I will call them and tell them you are getting it out of here (what, were you going to tow it?)." Thank you for rubbing salt in David's wounds. Once we got in...it just got better.
His car is in the middle. This thing was going to start any minute. He was changing it as fast as he could. Two people offered to help while several eyes stared. I tried to help, but my main job was to keep the kids in the car and hand whatever tools were needed. A clown was arriving and was in full character, "Lovely Buttons" (the kids have had her at a library event). While talking to the person in charge she popped open her mini-umbrella for "spot" shade. Then she walked by the car with her little umbrella. Stopped to see what David was doing and said, "Uh-oh" in her clown tone. Then she walked away. The look on David's face made me laugh some more. I had to excuse myself to the van, because the clown and me laughing wasn't helpful. David had a good sense of humor about it.
The cadi made it home and we got a bit of entertainment!
